This was a project with
another fantastic site. Located at Castlecrag NSW, it had an existing house
located far down on the block, away from the neighbours which were built back
up at street level. The design involved very substantial alterations and
additions to the existing house and ultilized cues from the surrounding bush
and the ethos of what Walter Burley Griffin first envisioned for the suburb.
Sandstone, zinc, glass and concrete being the materials of choice. The
sandstone base contains the bedrooms, while the upper level contains the
Kitchen, W.C., a large flagstoned deck and the 'Grand Room' - the
living/dining area of the house with operable doors front and rear to allow the
whole house to open up so the curved roof is acting like a giant umbrella over
the living spaces. Sadly, the client sold the site on, so it never went further
than the sketches and 3D images you see here.
